What we’re doing in Wales
Climate change affects everyone. Here’s how we’re coming together to tackle it in Wales.
:fill(fff))
Our climate is changing. In Wales, we’re seeing wetter winters, hotter summers and more extreme weather.
We need to act now. That’s why the Welsh Government is supporting actions that are fair, practical and within everyone’s reach – and which will make us healthier, help with the cost of living, boost our economy, create new jobs and safeguard Wales for future generations.
It’s about all of us trying to do what we can: the UK and Welsh Governments, local authorities, our communities, businesses, schools, and people from every walk of life.
We’re already making progress. The Welsh Government is leading the way, but everyone has the potential to play an important part in creating a cleaner, fairer, healthier Wales.
Our green goals
Wales has a big ambition: to reach net zero by 2050. That means we’ll be balancing the amount of harmful greenhouse gases we release into the atmosphere with the amount we take out.
To help us get there, we’ve set clear targets – from the number of homes we need to power with clean electricity to the amount of waste we recycle. We’re tracking our progress and can see where we need to do better.
We’re on our way. Here’s what Wales is doing to turn our green goals into reality.
Our everyday choices
Climate action begins at home – and together with delivery partners, the Welsh Government is making it easier for every household to contribute towards Wales becoming a zero-waste nation. That means reducing what we buy new, reusing and repairing what we can, and recycling the rest.
In Wales, we’ve led the way with policies to protect the environment. We’ve taken steps to eliminate single-use plastics, banned the sale of disposable or single-use vapes, and brought in a national workplace recycling law.
We’re also supporting community efforts to make goods last longer, such as repair cafes, reuse charities and libraries of things.
Recycling
In 2025, we achieved our target of recycling 70% of all the waste we produce.
Going zero waste
We’re on the way to achieving zero waste by 2050, when nothing will be sent to landfill.
Aiming for #1
Wales is already recognised as the second-best nation in the world for recycling – and we’re aiming for the top spot.
Championing sustainable travel
We all need to get from A to B, whether we’re picking up the children, heading to work, or visiting friends. The UK Government, the Welsh Government and our delivery partners are working to make sustainable travel easier for everyone, with better, more reliable public transport and safer walking and cycling routes.
That means less congestion, more exercise, cleaner air, and healthier places to live.
Cleaner driving
All new cars and vans sold in Wales will be zero-emission by 2035.
Charging ahead
We’ve increased the number of public chargers for electric vehicles in Wales by 87% in two years, and we’re investing £6m more this year to support the rollout.
Active travel
By 2040, we’ll make it possible for 45% of journeys to be made on foot, by bicycle or on public transport.

Cleaning up energy
Wales’ industrial heritage may be based on coal, but our future is in clean renewable energy. There are many benefits – greater energy security through less reliance on imported energy, green jobs, cheaper bills and more.
Phasing out fossil fuels is a vital part of this. But we also need to lower our energy demands through better-insulated buildings and energy-efficient technologies.
By making the most of wind, hydro and solar energy, we can build the infrastructure that will power our homes and lives for decades to come.
Generating cleaner energy
Renewable electricity generation in Wales has tripled since 2008 and doubled since 2012. Around 70% of this comes from onshore and offshore wind power.
Trydan Gwyrdd Cymru
A new public energy company, Trydan Gwyrdd Cymru, aims to generate electricity to power 180,000 homes by 2030 – and three times more by 2040.
Improving energy efficiency
Last year, we committed a record £256 million to improving the quality and energy efficiency of social homes in Wales – including low-carbon heating systems.
Making food more sustainable
Our food choices have a big impact on the environment and on our wellbeing.
This comes down to many different factors: how and where the food is produced and packaged, whether or not it’s in season, how much of it goes uneaten, and what happens to the waste.
By acting to reduce food waste, not only can we reduce harmful carbon emissions, but also help you save money and eat more healthily.
Reducing food waste
We’re providing support for community charities that rescue surplus food from going to waste, donating it to people in need.
Putting our waste to good use
For more than 10 years, every local authority in Wales has been collecting people’s kitchen waste weekly (and now from workplaces, too). It’s used to either generate biogas for energy and bio-fertiliser for farming, or is composted.
Protecting our landscapes and nature
Wales is a green and beautiful country. Nature is part of who we are: the coasts, the mountains, our wildlife, and our agricultural land. But it’s under pressure.
We’re stepping up our efforts to live in greater harmony with nature, protecting it for future generations. If we can do this, nature will help protect us – from floods, from overheating, and even from food insecurity – and will help soak up more carbon from the atmosphere.
Protecting land
We’re aiming to protect 30% of Welsh land, freshwater and marine areas for nature by 2030.
National Forest of Wales
We’ve started work on the National Forest of Wales – a network of woodlands that runs the length and breadth of Wales, benefiting our health and environment.
Restoring peatlands
We’ve been working to restore Wales’ peatlands, which store vast amounts of carbon – reaching our initial targets a year early.
Where can we start?
We want to make it as easy as possible for everyone to play a part in creating a cleaner, fairer, healthier Wales.
