Wales is banning single-use vapes: what you need to know

Ever walked down your street and spotted one of those brightly coloured single-use vapes lying in the gutter? You’re not alone.

A single-use vape littered on the street sitting among other rubbish and leaves

Based on research done by Material Focus in 2023, it's estimated that around 5 million single-use vapes are thrown away every week in the UK. 73% of vapers throw their single-use vapes away instead of recycling them which is bad news for our rivers, wildlife, and sewage systems.

Thousands of them, just lying there, breaking down into microplastics.

When littered, these vapes release plastic, nicotine salts, heavy metals like lead and mercury, and flammable lithium-ion batteries into the environment. These substances can contaminate waterways and soil, and are toxic to wildlife.

So, what’s being done?

From 1 June 2025, single-use vapes will be banned in Wales, and across the UK.

This means businesses won’t be allowed to sell or give away single-use vapes. That includes any vape designed to be used once and then thrown away, whether it contains nicotine or not.

Reusable vapes will still be available to buy for over-18s.

Why are we doing this?

Because single-use vapes are a nightmare for the environment. They’re made from mixed materials, plastic, metal, and batteries, which makes them difficult and costly to recycle. And when damaged, the batteries can catch fire.

They’re also turning up everywhere. Remember those figures?

What about businesses?

If you sell vapes, this affects you. From 1 June 2025:

  • You must stop selling single-use vape products

  • You cannot buy them from wholesalers

  • You must inform your staff about the ban

  • You must safely recycle any leftover stock

Single-use vapes can’t go in the bin. Talk to your supplier or waste contractor about how to dispose of them safely. Not following the rules could lead to fines or legal action.

Can I still vape?

Yes, but the focus is now on switching to reusable vapes. They’re better for the planet and, over time, more cost-effective.

We want to protect our country

Wales is acting to protect the planet. This ban is part of a bigger effort to reduce waste, tackle litter, and make more sustainable choices. We’re moving away from a throwaway culture and towards better habits.

If you use vapes, find your nearest recycling point on the Recycle Your Electricals website.

This isn’t about stopping people from vaping, (although if you want to quit, there’s free expert help from NHS Wales via Help Me Quit), it’s about stopping the environmental damage caused by products designed to be used once and thrown away.
